Jonna's Portraits Project Page

As an art project, Jonna decided to take some portraits of people she met throughout our journey. However, in an effort to both avoid objectifying people and to get to know the people, she set three rules: 1) She would only take photos of people at work. 2) She had to learn the person's name and 3) She had to learn the person's favorite song. Here are the photos she took:

1) Joseph: Doorman at the Portswood Hotel; "Dangerous" by Kardinal Offishall; wind brings up poison and rain cleanses.

2) Denise: Cashier at Ronnie's Sex Shop; "Misty" by Frank Sinatra; married for 42 years and it's all about give and take.

3) Tanyasa: Cashier at the Big Pineapple; "Dance With My Father" by Luther Vandross.

4) Siphiwo: Attendant at Shell Station; "House Music"; other attendants laugh at him when he says "House Music".

5) Iris: Bathroom attendant at the Engen Station; "Nkosi Sikelela Afrika" (unofficial national anthem); who she will vote for is a secret.

6) Bethuel: Driver for Moterrad Rentals; "Long Distance" by Brandy, his 5 year old daughter was not planned but is the light of his life.

7) Victor: Security guard at Wartburgen Hof Hotel; "Vuli'Ndelela" by Brenda; it will not rain today.

8) Marie: Owner of Wartburgen Hof Hotel; "Standing on the Edge" by Nickalous; she does not know what kind of birds she is taking care of (very colorful parrots).

9) Jade: waitress at Dee's Cafe; "When I Grow Up" by the Pussycat Dolls.

10) Adile: Attendant at Engen Station; "World's Greatest" by R. Kelly.

11) Sibusiso: Attendant at Engen Station; "Khalakatho" by Mandoza.

12) Tina: Owner and cashier at Biltong Shop; "Moma" by many Afrikan artists; she lives at home and takes care of her ailing mother and has neighbors who are American missionaries.

13) Jens: Game Drive Guide at Kruger National Park; "Three Little Birds" by Bob Marley.

14) Melissa: Caterer at Kruger National Park; "Pampoen" by Steve Hoffmeyer.

15) Eric: Taxi driver in Johannesburg; "Sondila"; does not like Zulus.

16) Bongani: Volunteer guide in Soweto; "Todi" by Olivia from Zimbabwe.

17) Ngesikasi: Student in Soweto; "Miss Independent" by Neo; wants to be a pilot when she grows up.
